About This Experience

Self-Guided Walk Only - Explore the geothermal landscape of Waimangu at your own pace on a self-guided walk or hike. Discover the world’s youngest geothermal site with lush valleys

About Waimangu Volcanic Valley

Waimangu Volcanic Valley, located near Rotorua in New Zealand, is the world’s youngest geothermal system, created by the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. This dramatic natural event transformed the landscape, forming a vibrant valley filled with steaming craters, colorful hot springs, and rare geothermal features. Waimangu, which means "black water" in Māori, is also home to Frying Pan Lake — one of the largest hot water springs in the world — and the mysterious Inferno Crater Lake, which rises and falls in cycles. Rich in geothermal activity, native flora, and unique wildlife, Waimangu is also a protected eco-tourism site, offering self-guided walks, boat cruises on Lake Rotomahana, and deep insight into the Earth’s geothermal forces. It's a must-visit destination for nature lovers, geology enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the raw power of the planet.
